Zermatt / Saas Fee

Zermatt and Saas-Fee are two alpine towns in the Swiss canton of Valais that hold an almost mythical status among mountaineers. Though different in character and atmosphere, both are absolute classics—places where mountain tradition, access to 4000-meter peaks, and a unique alpine spirit come together. For many, they are milestones on the path to achieving their dreams of serious alpine ascents.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IN ZERMATT AND SAAS-FEE WITH AN IVBV MOUNTAIN GUIDE?

The possibilities for spending unforgettable days in the Zermatt / Saas-Fee region with an IVBV-certified guide are virtually limitless. The only constraint is the amount of time you have—there’s enough climbing and mountaineering here to last a lifetime. Below are just a few selected options, all of which can be modified or combined to suit your preferences.

  • Zermatt is synonymous with the Matterhorn—one of the most iconic mountains in the world. For mountaineers, it’s a nearly sacred goal. But Zermatt is much more than a single summit. It’s the gateway to the entire Monte Rosa massif, which includes 4000-meter peaks like Dufourspitze (the highest mountain in Switzerland), Lyskamm, Castor, Pollux, and Breithorn.

  • Saas-Fee compared to Zermatt, Saas-Fee is quieter, more intimate, and surrounded by magnificent glaciers, making it an ideal location for training, courses, and acclimatization. It’s known for easy access to several 4000-meter peaks such as: Allalinhorn – perfect for a first ascent over 4000 m, Alphubel, Weissmies, Lagginhorn, Nadelhorn, and Strahlhorn – each offering a mix of glaciated routes and rocky ridges of varying difficulty

Many of my clients combine both locations into a complete Swiss alpine experience. The journey often begins in Saas-Fee with easier ascents, acclimatization, and training—and culminates in Zermatt, with more demanding and legendary objectives, often finishing with the Matterhorn as the highlight of the trip.

Both destinations also offer stunning panoramic views, high-quality accommodations, and world-class alpine infrastructure.
