High Tatras Crown
The Great Crown of the Tatras – A True High-Mountain Challenge
The Great Crown of the Tatras consists of the fourteen highest peaks in the Tatra Mountains.
The idea is inspired by the Himalayan and Karakoram “Eight-Thousanders,” but in this case, the peaks must exceed 8,000 feet in elevation and have topographic prominence over the saddle connecting them to the nearest neighboring summit.
The Great Crown includes the so-called Tatra giants, such as:
Gerlachovský štít, Lomnický štít, Ľadový štít, Pyšný štít, Vysoká, Kežmarský štít, Končistá, Baranie rohy, Rysy, Kriváň, Bradavica, Gánok, Slavkovský štít, Prostredný hrot.
HOW DOES A GUIDED ASCENT OF THE GREAT CROWN OF THE TATRAS WORK?
Climbing the Great Crown peaks with an IFMGA-certified mountain guide is often a multi-year project.
With enough determination, several summits can be climbed in a single season. I typically lead these ascents via their classic (standard) routes. All the Great Crown peaks are located in Slovakia, and many feature complex topography — another strong reason to hire a certified IFMGA guide.
These are demanding high-mountain trekking experiences, but the technical difficulty is moderate and suitable for any reasonably fit person.
Alternative Routes to the Great Crown of the Tatras
If you're looking for a more adventurous challenge, I also guide ascents of the Great Crown peaks via less popular or more difficult routes. Most of these mountains offer multiple ascent options, and together we can choose a route suited to your skills and goals.
Why the Great Crown of the Tatras?
Climbing all 14 peaks of the Great Crown is a highly rewarding accomplishment.
It requires strong determination, endurance, and persistence.
Many have started this project, but far fewer have completed it successfully.
Hiring a professional guide will greatly increase your chances of reaching all 14 summits safely and efficiently.
