Lomnický štít
Climbing Lomnický štít with an IFMGA Guide – A Unique Mountain Experience
A guided ascent of Lomnický štít with an IFMGA-certified guide is a fantastic opportunity to begin your adventure of climbing Tatra peaks that are not accessible by marked tourist trails.
This is a high-mountain trekking experience with a slightly more ambitious character, but the technical difficulties are moderate and suitable for anyone with average fitness.
WHAT DOES A GUIDED ASCENT OF LOMNICA LOOK LIKE?
The most popular route to Lomnický štít with an IFMGA guide during the summer season follows the South side of the mountain.
The tour begins at the lower cable car station in Tatranská Lomnica, from where we take a gondola and chairlift up to Lomnické sedlo (Lomnica Saddle).
The approach initially leads along an indistinct, easy path. Once we reach steeper southern slopes, we rope up and enter more exposed terrain. With the help of iron steps and chains, we climb over rocky outcrops. After about two hours, we reach Lomnický štít, the second highest peak in the Tatra Mountains.
The descent follows the same route, or alternatively, a steep chimney (Franz's Chimney) leading under the West Face of Lomnický štít to the start of the Tatarka via ferrata. This exposed ferrata leads us back to the area near the saddle. From there, we return to Tatranská Lomnica via chairlift and gondola.
Alternative Ascent Routes with an IFMGA Guide
I also guide ascents of Lomnický štít via alternative routes:
The Birkenmajer Pillar, which has more of a climbing character.
A variation that descends the Tatarka via ferrata and approaches Franz’s Chimney from the west side to reach the summit via chains.
Why Lomnický štít?
At 2,633 meters, Lomnický štít is the second highest and one of the most iconic peaks in the Tatra Mountains.
Its popularity remains strong, and standing on the small, famous balcony overhanging the west face is a dream for many hikers.
Lomnický štít steep, dramatic massif lies on a southern side ridge of the Tatra’s main crest. The mountain is located entirely in Slovakia, and no marked tourist trail leads to the summit.
According to Slovak law, only IFMGA-certified guides are authorized to lead clients to the summit of Lomnický štít.
From the top, unforgettable panoramic views open up over the High Tatras, Spiš, Liptov, and the Low Tatras.
